Marten Mickos appreciates Roorkee Global Community
Posted on Sunday, February 08 @ 22:28:12 MST by gops

IITR - California News Recently I had a chance to meet Marten Mickos, ex-CEO of MySQL and currently Sr.VP of Databases at Sun Microsystems. I told Marten about IIT Roorkee Global Community and how we used MySQL in building a Global Alumni Community connecting more than 2800 Roorkee Alumni worldwide.

To my surprise, Marten asked me the url for our website. I gave it to him as http://www.iitralumni.net/ He immediately accessed the website on his laptop and reviewed what we did with MySQL. He asked me about the technology that was used and the number of years we've been using MySQL. He congratulated for the wonderful work we did with MySQL and how we leveraged the LAMP stack (Linux Apache MySQL and Php) in building a Global Community.

What interested Marten is the idea that "Roorkee alumni believed in the power of MySQL way back in 2003" when it was still in its infancy. At that time Marten who took over the MySQL company as the CEO was planning on growing MySQL to a big company. He knew the potential of MySQL - the puzzle remained how to grow it to a global company and become a Leader in Open source software. Today all of us know that MySQL is a success story and that it was bought by Sun Microsystems for a billion dollars.

For those of you who dont know about MySQL - MySQL has become the #1 database choice for delivering online applications. MySQL powers more online applications than any other database in the world including such high profile web sites as: Yahoo!, Google, Flickr, YouTube, Wikipedia and thousands of corporate online applications.[ref: mysql website]

Good job Roorkee Alumni and let us all engage in bringing innovation to our communities.

Marten Gustaf Mickos (born November 6, 1962 in Espoo, Finland) was chief executive officer (CEO) of MySQL AB. He has served as chief executive officer from January 2001 to February 2009. Since Sun bought MySQL AB he is senior vice president of the database group at Sun Microsystems. In February 2008 he was also announced as member of the board of Mozilla Messaging. Marten also was a co-founder and CEO of MatchON Sports Ltd. Previously, he was CEO of Sonera subsidiary Intellitel Communications Inc, and has held sales and marketing positions at Solid Information Technology Ltd and other growth-oriented software companies.
